Ceramic Tile Of The Prime Minister William Gladstone Made By Sherwin And Cotton
The item you are viewing is a tile designed by George Cartlidge. This portrait tile of Gladstone was first produced by Sherwin & Cotton, Vine St, Hanley (Stoke On Trent) in 1898. This firm closed in 1911. The Portrait is signed by H.S. Mendelssohn and upon the back the it is embossed with "Made by Shewin and Cotton at their works in Hanley in the County of Stafford 1898". The Tile measures 9" X 6" (Imperial) and has been made on a white thick bisuit. The tile has some slight crazing but is an exquisite piece non the less. An example of the same tile is on display at the Gladstone Potteries museum in Stoke on Trent. A very random piece available through The Monster Company.
